When to reach for it
When you have a full draft and the instinct to start line-editing — which is usually the instinct to avoid the harder read. This is the pass that asks whether the argument holds before you make it pretty. Do it after coaching has helped you get the ideas down, and before you spend an evening on word choice.

Before it says a word about prose, it flags where your draft argues against itself: a claim in paragraph two that the conclusion quietly contradicts, an assertion resting on evidence you never supplied, a leap the reader can't make with you. Each tension is pinned to the exact passage, so you're looking at the sentence, not a vague note.

Check what you assumed
It surfaces the assumptions your argument rests on — the things you've treated as given that a sceptical reader wouldn't. Some you'll defend, some you'll realise you can't, and a few you'll want to make explicit rather than smuggle in. Naming the assumption is often the difference between a claim and an argument.
